Vaccine Informatics for Vaccine Research and Development

Vaccine research and development (R&D) has progressed dramatically in the post-genomics and information era. Vaccine informatics is an emerging bioinformatics branch that focuses on development and applications of bioinformatics technologies to address questions in vaccine research, development, and vaccine surveillance and safety. The VIOLIN vaccine database and analysis system (http://www.violinet.org) was developed for bioinformatical annotation and analysis of vaccine research data and promotion of vaccine R&D. Vaxign (Vaccine Design; http://www.violinet.org/vaxign) is a new VIOLIN program that predicts vaccine targets by bioinformatical genome analysis based on the principles of reverse vaccinology. To promote vaccine data standardization, integration, and computer-assisted reasoning, a community-based Vaccine Ontology (VO; http://www.violinet.org/vaccineontology) is actively being developed. Case studies will be introduced to illustrate how these tools dramatically improve vaccine research and development.
