The
Protein remote homology inference and multiple sequence alignment
Information about the protein structure, function and evolution can be derived from remote homology inference. Multiple sequence alignments have broad applications in homology inference, structure modeling and evolutionary analysis. We developed PROMALS, a multiple alignment method that combines sequence database searches, structure prediction and profile consistency to improve the alignment quality of distantly related proteins. PROMALS achieves better results than other leading alignment methods. PROMALS alignments were used to detect proteins potentially involved in gamete membrane fusion.
